How salary to hourly conversion works
A salary and an hourly wage measure the same thing: what your time is worth. Converting between them helps you compare job offers, price freelance work, or check whether longer hours really mean a raise.
The formulas
Salary to hourly: Hourly = Annual salary ÷ Hours per year
Hourly to salary: Annual = Hourly × Hours per year
Overtime = Hourly × 1.5
| Period | Formula |
|---|---|
| Daily | Hourly × 8 (standard workday) |
| Weekly | Hourly × Hours per week |
| Bi-weekly | Annual ÷ 26 |
| Monthly | Annual ÷ 12 |
Quick shortcut for a US full-time job: halve the salary and drop the thousands. $65,000 is roughly $32.50 an hour; the exact figure is $31.25.
US vs UK: 40 hours vs 37.5 hours
The US standard week is 40 hours. Many UK contracts run 9:00 to 17:00 with an unpaid lunch, giving 37.5 hours. That gap adds up to 130 hours a year, so the same salary number gives a higher hourly rate in the UK.
| USA | UK | |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time week | 40 hours | 37.5 hours |
| Hours per year | 2,080 | 1,950 |
| Common pay schedule | Bi-weekly | Monthly |
| Overtime | 1.5× over 40 hrs for non-exempt staff | Set by contract |
| Paid holiday | No federal minimum | 5.6 weeks minimum |
| 50,000 a year as hourly | $24.04 | £25.64 |
Paid holiday changes the picture too. UK workers get at least 5.6 weeks of paid leave a year, while US paid vacation depends on the employer. Because that leave is paid, keep weeks at 52 when converting a salary. To see what you earn for each hour you are actually at work, enter only your working weeks: £45,000 over 46.4 working weeks is £25.86 an hour.
Worked examples
- US salary, $65,000: $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour. Overtime is $46.88, and a monthly paycheck is $5,416.67.
- UK salary, £45,000: £45,000 ÷ 1,950 = £23.08 an hour. Overtime is £34.62, and a month is £3,750.00.
- Hourly pay, $22: $22 × 40 × 52 = $45,760 a year. With two unpaid weeks (50 weeks), it drops to $44,000.
Comparing job offers
When two offers use different pay formats, convert both to the same unit first. A $60,000 salary at 45 hours a week works out to $25.64 an hour, while a $27 hourly role at 40 hours pays $56,160 a year. The salary looks bigger, but the hourly role pays more for every hour and leaves five hours a week free. Check overtime rules as well, because extra hours paid at 1.5× can close the gap quickly.
All figures are gross pay. Tax, Social Security or National Insurance, and pension contributions are deducted later, so take-home pay will be lower.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly wage?
Divide your annual salary by your yearly working hours (hours per week × weeks per year). For example, $65,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $31.25 an hour, and £45,000 ÷ 1,950 hours = £23.08 an hour.
What is the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay?
Bi-weekly pay comes every two weeks, giving 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly pay comes twice a month, giving 24 paychecks a year. On a $65,000 salary that is $2,500.00 versus $2,708.33 per check. The yearly total is the same.
How is 1.5x overtime calculated?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then by your overtime hours. At $31.25 an hour the overtime rate is $46.88, so 5 extra hours add $234.38. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires this for non-exempt employees working over 40 hours a week. In the UK, overtime pay depends on your contract.
How does unpaid PTO affect the calculation?
Unpaid time off reduces the weeks you are paid for. At $22 an hour and 40 hours a week, two unpaid weeks cut yearly pay from $45,760 to $44,000. In salary-to-hourly mode, entering fewer weeks shows your pay per hour actually worked: $65,000 over 48 weeks is $33.85 an hour.
Are the results before or after tax?
All results are gross pay, before income tax, Social Security, National Insurance, pension contributions and other deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower.
